Meet Dr. Kathleen Burns

Hello! I'm Kat Burns, and I'm passionate about helping people move, breathe, and feel their best.

I believe the body functions as an interconnected system and that lasting results come from treating the whole person—not just a diagnosis. My approach combines hands-on manual therapy, movement and breathing assessment, education, and individualized exercise to help you better understand your body and achieve your goals. Every treatment plan is tailored to your unique needs, priorities, and lifestyle.

I earned my Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Ithaca College in 2014 before completing an orthopedic residency through Therapeutic Associates in Eugene, Oregon, where I became a Board-Certified Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (OCS). I later completed fellowship training through the North American Institute of Orthopedic Manual Therapy (NAIOMT), earning the designation of Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists (FAAOMPT).

My clinical interests include orthopedic manual therapy, breathing assessment and retraining, scoliosis-specific rehabilitation, and orofacial myofunctional therapy. I am also a Certified Breathing Behavioral Analyst (CBBA), certified in International Schroth Three-Dimensional Scoliosis Therapy (ISST), and trained in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. I enjoy helping patients understand how breathing, posture, movement, and jaw function work together to support long-term health.

Outside the clinic, I teach continuing education courses, mentor healthcare professionals, and teach yoga classes. When I'm not working, you'll find me hiking around the island with my husband, spending time with our cat, Blink, or enjoying any opportunity to be around horses.

I believe physical therapy is an investment in lifelong health, and I'm honored to serve the Friday Harbor community. I look forward to partnering with you to help you move with greater confidence, resilience, and ease.

Yoga with Kat

Join physical therapist and certified yoga instructor Dr. Kat Burns for a Vinyasa flow class that blends mindful movement, breathwork, and meditation to improve mobility, build strength, and support a healthy, resilient nervous system.

This class combines flowing yoga sequences with intentional breathing practices to enhance breathing mechanics, improve body awareness, and promote vagal tone and parasympathetic ("rest and digest") regulation. You'll leave feeling stronger, more grounded, and equipped with practical tools to manage stress and support your overall well-being.

This class is appropriate for individuals who can safely get on and off the floor, spend time on their hands and knees, and perform basic balance activities independently. All experience levels are welcome, with modifications provided to meet your individual needs.

Testimonials

“Finding and working with Kat was a gamechanger. She helped me recover from a full meniscus repair. I’d show up to my appointment, and she was ready to roll! With her clam, focused, and professional approach, I was able to trust her and the process right away. I made a full recovery and have since worked with her for another injury. With equally great results. Her insight and exercises are always spot on! Many people can relate to feeling down in the dumps when injured but Kat has an incredible ability to make you see the progress you’ve made week to week, and she will be your biggest cheerleader along the way. She is the only physical therapist I fully trust and I recommend her to everyone.”

- Leah

“I was initially referred to Kat for pre-surgery therapy following a complex rotator cuff injury. Her knowledge and experience immediately inspired confidence, but what truly sets her apart is her partnership approach to care. She is an exceptional teacher, helping me understand body mechanics through anatomy diagrams, visualizations, and practical explanations. Her guidance not only improved my strength and mobility before surgery but also motivated me to stay committed to my home program. At my pre-surgery appointment, my surgeon was “amazed” by the mobility I had gained and how prepared I was for recovery. Throughout the slow and sometimes painful rehabilitation process, Kat has been an empathetic coach and cheerleader. She considers my lifestyle, priorities, and long-term goals, helping me build healthier movement patterns that extend far beyond my shoulder recovery. I am stronger, more confident, and better equipped to maintain my overall health because of her care.”

"Kat Burns is a natural healer. She is curious and always striving to learn more. She looks at a problem from different perspectives to understand the whole picture and plans the course of treatment accordingly. Her encouragement and positivity motivate me to do what she recommends to hasten the healing process. Our community is very fortunate to have her here."
